First dates can be hard enough for people who stammer. Imagine being filmed for a television programme whilst on one! Participants know nothing about the date they have been set up with other than what they look like, from an emailed photograph. I found out about it via a link on the BSA Facebook page , saying that Channel 4 were looking for people who stammer to audition. Ten minutes later I had a phone call from one of the producers, Joe, who gave me a brief phone interview daunting I know, but Joe was very nice and made me relaxed as he knew I stammered.
He asked me about myself, what kind of girls I like and how my stammer affects me. He seemed really interested, and a few days later I got the call to go to London to audition. I was worried that I was going to come across as a bumbling, crying idiot and people were going to laugh at me. The audition was basically an extended filmed version of the phone interview, with a bit more emphasis on my stammer.

But the editing made it all look as if it took place on the same night, in a sort of hopeful-romantic Groundhog Day. And so each date took place at the same place, in the same clothes, often with the same questions and jokes.
It was like, why doesn’t Netflix find six people for me to date? You said on the show that this was your first true blind date. Yes. Often, we all.

I woke up again today — and I’ll tell you one thing, every morning I say to myself, ‘I am happy to be alive’. I’m happy inside my head; I have happy thoughts. I’m lucky, nobody in my family has been affected, or my friends. I’ve got food on my table and when I go to the toilet, the toilet flushes and hot water actually runs — and a lot of people don’t have that luck.
It makes me laugh when people say, ‘Oh Fred, you’ve got to have more balance in your life’. I always say, ‘I can’t have balance because I either work or I don’t work’. And if it’s a project and it’s exciting, I want to do it. And if there’s another one, I want to do it as well. Right now there’s no work, so the balance is either you do something, or you don’t. But when everything starts again, it’s probably going to all start in one go!
Me too. It’s just so joyous, and the nice thing about it is it can be very unexpected.
