I do have the minimum insurance required by our government basically it will cover me if I end up in hospital unexpectedly , but nothing that would cover having a baby in a private hospital, or being able to select my doctor, midwife, or elective caesarean. So I had to have my baby through the public hospital system.
We have a couple of options for public hospital births. You can use the full public system, which means it is free but you have to attend the hospital you will labor in for all appointments and ultrasounds. I chose the shared care option as I have a local doctor whom I can walk to, versus the hospital which was an Uber ride away unless my mother or husband was able to drive me. I decided to keep track of the actual costs of my pregnancy, as I am a bit of a spreadsheet nerd.
So began the nine months of baby growing and number tracking! Most costs are variable, such as how much you want to spend on maternity wear, whether you buy secondhand or new, do you want to take vitamins and what brand, etc. Another two big variables are the costs of ultrasounds and the option to do DNA testing.

Updated July 11, Medical imaging companies have been accused of exploiting a Medicare loophole to charge patients and the government more for services. The ABC has learned some companies are making vulnerable patients who need multiple scans return over a number of days. The practice helps them avoid a Medicare billing regime where set fees are reduced for second and subsequent scans conducted on the same day.
It comes after the ABC revealed earlier in the year specialist doctors could be raking in millions of dollars by forcing patients back to their GP for a fresh referral each year. But the imaging industry said sometimes there were legitimate medical or logistical reasons to ask patients to return on different days. However, in cases where practices do not bulk-bill, it results in the maximum gap payment for patients.
Consumer advocates said asking patients to make unnecessary repeated visits was a waste of time and money.
Ultrasound is a safe and widely used imaging technique. Ultrasound produces detailed pictures of the body in real-time using high frequency sound waves, which are produced by a special ultrasound probe, called a transducer. The frequency of these sound waves is higher than that detected by the human ear and when they are reflected by a part of the body they are detected by the probe and used to create images that can be displayed on a monitor.

Osteoporosis is a medical condition where the bones have become fragile and brittle due to reduced bone density or mass. The loss of density is often caused by a decreasing or insufficient amount of minerals in the bone. Bones like tissue and muscle need these minerals to maintain good health and strength. Common deficiencies responsible for reduced bone density include calcium and vitamin D.
However, there can be other reasons for low bone density, including certain medical conditions and medications. Learn more about the various risk factors of low bone density here — Osteoporosis Australia. Osteoporosis often has no symptoms until a low impact fracture has been caused. However, the known risk factors can greatly increase the likelihood of developing Osteoporosis.
Patients identified as having the greatest risk can then be referred for a bone density scan to determine if their bone health is being affected. Diagnosing Osteoporosis or low bone density early is important. With the help of your doctor, you can work on improving your bone density to reduce the risk of breaks. Some patients may even be able to return their bones to a normal density range. In order to give our at risk patients the opportunity to identify low bone density early, we arrange bone density scan clinics at each of our practice locations.

An ultrasound scan creates internal images of the body using high-frequency sound waves. This generally involves a healthcare professional applying gel to the skin and then moving a hand-held transducer device on the skin, above the part of the body that is being examined. Ultrasounds are commonly used during pregnancy , as well as to examine specific parts of the body such as the abdominal and pelvic region, and musculoskeletal and vascular systems.
According to the Better Health Channel, pregnant women will typically be referred for routine ultrasounds during the first, second and third trimesters of their pregnancy. Medicare can help cover the cost of some routine ultrasounds. This includes certain ultrasound services, and specifically includes obstetric and gynaecological ultrasounds, as well as general, cardiac, vascular, urological and musculoskeletal ones.
Medicare will pay you a benefit on these services if you are eligible. For example, to get a rebate, you may require a valid referral from your doctor for the ultrasound. The rebate will be a percentage of the listed MBS fee. The government has also announced that from 1 July, , it will start to index Medicare rebates for ultrasound services.
